TEVET gets a new project on green skills development
Malawi’s TEVET system has received a new pilot project that seeks to equip TEVET providers with essential skills in developing, designing, assembling and maintaining electric bicycles and light hybrid vehicles, fostering both environmental sustainability and economic self-sufficiency.
The project named EcoCharge is being funded by the European Union’s Erasmus+ program and aims at transforming electric mobility education by promoting sustainable transportation solutions through the innovative use of recycled materials and the principles of a circular economy.
Speaking at the launch of the project held recently at Don Bosco Technical Institute in Lilongwe, TEVETA’s Director of Training Programmes, Modesto Gomani, expressed enthusiasm for the project’s potential describing it as an avenue for enriching eco-friendly skills development.
“As the world is going green from so many angles, the TEVET sector also needs to embed this concept in its training and programming. This is why we welcome this project with open arms. It also brings with it expertise from different countries such as Zambia, Italy, Finland and Spain which will enrich its implementation,” he said.
Ministry of Labour’s Principal Quality Assurance Officer Simplex Gondwe, underscored the alignment of this initiative with the Malawi 2063.
“This project is in line with MW2063 which promotes climate change adaptation and will assist us in developing an environmentally friendly skills framework that meets our aspirations,” Gondwe said.
TEVETA Zambia’s Director General, Cleophas Takaiza, highlighted the project’s role in supporting Zambia’s green transition.
“Adopting green technology and decarbonization is critical for mitigating challenges such as drought-induced energy and food crises. Having relevant green skills is part of developing our resilience to such shocks,” Takaiza added.
The two year project will be implemented until December 2027 and has a total funding of €399,895.00 which has been allocated to the 7 project partners namely Centro San Vator from Spain, 3DBEAR, FORMA AZIONE from Italy, Don Bosco Malawi, Don Bosco Zambia, TEVETA Malawi and TEVETA Zambia.
