Chikwawa Raises the Bar on Quality in Informal Apprenticeship Training
Chikwawa District has taken a decisive step towards strengthening the quality and credibility of informal skills training, as the Southern Region Informal Sector TEVET Providers Association (SORISTIPA) convened a high-level district TEVET stakeholders meeting focused on coordination, and compliance to standards.
Chikwawa District has taken a decisive step towards strengthening the quality and credibility of informal skills training, as the Southern Region Informal Sector TEVET Providers Association (SORISTIPA) convened a high-level district TEVET stakeholders meeting focused on coordination, and compliance to standards.
The meeting held at the Galamukani Community Skills Development Centre on 11 February, brought together Community Technical Colleges, Community Skills Development Centres, district officials, NGOs, private companies, TEVETA, and local artisans. Training providers operating without registration were also invited, underscoring the commitment to inclusivity and improvement.
SORISTIPA Chairperson, Mcshon D. Chikopa, emphasised that quality training thrives on strong collaboration and adherence to standards.
“Skills development can only have real impact when stakeholders operate within a coordinated and regulated framework,” he said.
Speaking on behalf of TEVETA, Regional Service Centre Manager (South), Conceptor Bamusi, highlighted the vital role of registration in safeguarding quality and credibility.
"When providers register with TEVETA, they commit to meeting national standards, ensuring beneficiaries acquire relevant, recognised and market-ready skills. Operating outside this framework compromises quality and will attract enforcement measures," she said.
In line with its quality assurance role, TEVETA facilitates the development of TEVET standards, enforces these standards in training delivery and registers training providers in both formal and informal apprenticeship programmes.
