Hon. Minister Commends Lilongwe Technical College for Outstanding Performance

The Minister of Labour, Skills and Innovation, Hon. Joel Chigona, MP, on Thursday paid an official visit to Lilongwe Technical College to monitor the examinations currently underway and appreciate the institution’s ongoing efforts in delivering quality Technical, Entrepreneurial and Vocational Education and Training (TEVET).

Upon arrival, the Minister was warmly welcomed by the College Principal, Mr. Sizgika Mvalo, who briefed him on the college’s operations, achievements, and student enrolment trends. Mr. Mvalo highlighted that Lilongwe Technical College is currently training 2,146 students from Levels 1 to 4, a testament to the growing demand for technical and vocational skills in the country.

Mr. Mvalo expressed gratitude for the Minister’s visit, noting that such engagements greatly encourage and motivate students as they strive to excel in their studies and practical assessments. “The presence of the Honourable Minister inspires both students and staff to continue working hard and upholding high training standards,” he said.

During his tour of examination rooms, Hon. Chigona commended the college for maintaining a pass rate above 85%, reflecting the institution’s commitment to excellence and effective training delivery. He was also impressed by the increasing number of young women opting for TVET programmes, an encouraging trend that supports national efforts to promote gender inclusivity in technical fields.

Addressing the students, the Minister urged them to stay dedicated and focused on their training, reminding them that, “life is simple, but never easy.” He encouraged them to harness their skills, innovate, and work towards becoming self-sustained and productive citizens contributing to Malawi’s socio-economic development.

The Minister’s visit comes shortly after the Ministry released the latest selection of students for various apprenticeship programmes across national and community technical colleges. This initiative aligns with government efforts to expand access to vocational training and equip the youth with relevant skills for employability and entrepreneurship.

TEVETA remains committed to supporting institutions like Lilongwe Technical College as they continue to empower Malawi’s youth and strengthen the country’s technical workforce.
