Advancing Inclusion in Skills Development
Building an inclusive TEVET system has been a core commitment of TEVETA since its establishment in 1999. This commitment is further reinforced in the TEVETA 2023–2030 Strategic Plan, which includes a dedicated pillar on Access and Equity to ensure that all Malawians—regardless of age, economic status, or vulnerability—can access quality TEVET opportunities.
“Over the years, TEVETA has supported training institutions with assistive materials, trained instructors in sign language, promoted disability-friendly learning environments, and encouraged institutions to adopt practices that accommodate learners with diverse needs. These efforts continue shaping a TEVET system where no one is left behind,” said Executive Director Elwin Chiwembu Sichiola.
Today, this progress is reflected in the journeys of graduates with disabilities who passed through TEVET programmes. Christopher Chikaoneka, a Bricklaying graduate from Salima Technical College, born with one arm, says,
“After graduating, I hit the ground running and started winning contracts for various projects, including building classroom blocks for two different schools in Dedza and working as a foreman.” “My physical disability doesn’t define me, it’s my skills that set me apart,” he added.
Ruth “Upie” Chirwa, who uses a wheelchair, is a graduate from Miracle Technical Institute and is now a talented fashion designer, who has won awards, opened her own shop, and has had her designs showcased internationally by Lily Alfonso. She shared, "One of the projects I worked on with TEVETA was when I was hosting my very first fashion show and they were our biggest sponsor."
Their testimonies show what becomes possible when training is accessible, support is available, and institutions embrace inclusivity.
As we mark the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, TEVETA reaffirms its commitment to ensuring that every Malawian, regardless of physical ability, has a fair chance to learn, grow, and contribute to the country’s development. TEVET is for everyone, let’s continue encouraging persons with disabilities to enroll in the programmes of their choice.
